Ten people died on Sunday night after a matatu they were travelling in was swept away by floods at Poroko in Trans Mara West district.
Trans Mara police boss Titus Yoma said that the vehicle headed towards Kisii town had 15 passengers when the accident happened at around 7pm.
Mr Yoma said the bodies were taken to Trans Mara Medicare Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification and burial.
The rescue operation at the scene of the accident, about five kilometres from Kilgoris town, was hampered by heavy rainfall, with the vehicle being found almost 100 metres from the road.
Dr Robert Mutula of Trans Mara District Hospital said three people who included the driver of the matatu were brought to the hospital for treatment.
“We found the driver with no injuries and discharged him, while the other two, a man and a woman, were treated and are undergoing counselling” said Dr Mutula.
He said that the two patients were stable and would be discharged on Tuesday.
Ms Mary Sancha, 50, a survivor, speaking from her hospital bed said that she could only thank God for rescuing her from the jaws of death.
“One of the passengers told the driver to slow down as we approached the flood waters on the road near the bridge but he ignored saying that he could not be shown how to do a job that he understood well,” Ms Sancha said.
According to the survivor, the next thing she saw was the vehicle being swept away with the driver and a passenger jumping out of the vehicle before it rolled down the road.
Most of her fellow passengers fell over her before the vehicle came to a stop around 100 metres from the road.
“I held onto a tree as the flood waters moved in high speed in my direction, but I miraculously survived and was rescued by villagers who had arrived at the scene” said Ms Sancha.
According to a resident, Mr John Sanag, who was part of the rescue team, bodies of five men and five women were recovered from the scene of the accident.
Most of the passengers were traders from the neighbouring Kisii County headed home after closing the day’s business in Kilgoris town.
