“I would like to plant a tree here at school and also at home. Our teacher told us that trees will give us a shade and we can also eat fruits from them in the future,” 12-year-old, Lydia Anguko of Nyoko Primary School, explains why she was planting a tree in Yumbe District
She was part of 474 pupils that waited under the midday sun together with their headmaster, Simon Draga, to receive a convoy that made a stop at her school in a children-driven campaign tagged, Uganda’s Little Hand Go Green.
Joseph Masembe, the man behind the campaign, chose to use the northern Uganda and West Nile circuit planting trees in Yumbe, Arua and Karuma as the launch pad for the campaign. Without a sponsor but with a team of volunteers, he headed down North last week on the beginning of an ambitious journey that will see each Ugandan child plant a tree.
