Behind bars: Floyd Mayweather Jnr is serving his 90-day sentence in a Las Vegas Detention Centre |
Had the $200million fight which never happens taken place the other day, he would have had to try it with no hands.
When the Money man surrendered to the delayed start of his jail sentence, he was handcuffed before being led away to the Clark County Detention Centre in downtown Las Vegas.
It was an ignominious moment for a proud man but the humiliation was cushioned by the short duration of his incarceration for battering the mother of his children, in their presence.
Fight time: Manny Pacquiao is preparing for his bout with Timothy Bradley |
With three days already served Mayweather faces a maximum of 87 days behind bars, with the probability of release two or three weeks sooner if he is of good behaviour.
That would put him back on training schedule for a November showdown with Pacquiao... if they can ever come to terms.
The Pacman has agreed to Olympic standard drugs testing but does not accept the Money man’s offer of the $40m short end of the purse, with no upside from the pay-TV bonanza.
Nor will the Filipino congressman accede to Mayweather’s bizarre demand that he dumps his promoter, Bob Arum.
Money always talks, or so we say, but the more Mr Money talks the further the prospect of the biggest fight of this century so far recedes into the distance.
That spectacular seemed to edge closer after Mayweather saw Pacquiao struggle to win a disputed decision in the third fight of his trilogy with Juan Manuel Marquez, who Floyd Jnr beat easily.
But it is unlikely that Mayweather will have the chance, this Saturday, to study his rival for the mythical title of best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Although Pacquiao will be boxing Tim Bradley that evening just a few miles along the Vegas Strip – at the MGM Grand – there is not believed to be cable or satellite pay-per-view reception at the jail-house.
Nor, although his imprisonment will be much shorter than the three years after which Mike Tyson was never quite the same fighter again, there is no telling how the experience will affect Mayweather... until he comes out.
