Uganda’s preparations for the London 2012 Olympics have got a sh25m boost from leading electricity distributor Umeme.
Umeme managing Director Charles Chapman handed over the cheque to acting to acting Uganda Olympic Committee president William Blick at Lugogo today morning.
Sh225m is required for the team’s preparations, travel and stay in London. Umeme’s offer has been directed towards the team’s travel to London.
A total of 12 Ugandan athletes, one badminton player and a swimmer have so far qualified for the July 27 to August 12 summer games. UOC vice president (technical) Denis Galabuzi says they expect the team to grow to 30 sportsmen.
Education and Sports State minister Charles Bakkabulindi commended the electricity company and urged other corporates to follow it. “This is indeed a remarkable gesture that makes Umeme stand out as a body committed to its social responsibilities.”
Champman said Umeme is proud to make the contribution. “Our support is drawn from our commitment to play our role in the economic and social development of Uganda. To Team Uganda; we encourage you to fly our national flag high with pride,” said Chapman.
Umeme is the first corporate company that has come out to support Uganda’s preparations for the London games.
