Dear....

We warmly invite you to attend our symposium

Information, Innovation, Revolution – Africa and Germany as reflected in the Media

on 10 and 11 September in Hamburg.

The opportunities for participating in and indeed helping to shape public communication and public opinion are greater today than ever before. Blogs, Wikipedia, citizen journalism, social media etc. are some of the key words used to discuss the blurring of boundaries between media production, distribution and reception. We invite key players from Germany and African countries to come and discuss the potential for civic engagement and intercultural exchange with the media sector.

In particular, we want to turn our attention to opportunities for media engagement and discuss the potential that new and innovative media formats offer for more in-depth exchange with the countries of Africa and for better informed public opinion.

We want to draw inspiration from successful bloggers and citizen journalists in Germany, Nigeria, Tanzania,Kenya,Ghana and Uganda and discuss with them suitable formats and ideas for engaging in partnership initiatives and collaborating with different media.

The first evening will be rounded off with some activities and the opportunity to exchange ideas in a relaxed atmosphere over music and refreshments.

On the second day we want to begin working with you to develop specific models for new German-African partnership projects.

“Do tanks” (pro-active think tanks) will work on the following focus areas:

1.   Training and professional development in the media environment
2.   Online journalism

3.   Youth media
4.   Radio

After the symposium you will be invited to collaborate in German-African working groups to flesh out the details of models that can be put into practice after a participatory selection process.

We very much welcome your input and expertise and would therefore be delighted if you could join us in the symposium.

Please register your confirmed attendance by 20 August under this link.

This symposium is being held as part of the partnership programme of the Partnership with Africa Foundation e.V. and the Africa Initiative of the Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).The programme promotes and coordinates civic engagement in Germany and African countries.
