Uganda People’s Congress (UPC), Democratic Party (DP) and Social Democratic Party (SDP) formed the pressure group that advocates for free and fair elections.
The leaders of these parties were slated to address a rally at Nsambya play grounds at noon but the police cordoned off Uganda House, the headquarters of UPC were Mr Olara Otunnu, Mr Matthias Nsubuga and Mr Mike Mabike among others.
The leaders of these parties were slated to address a rally at Nsambya play grounds at noon but the police cordoned off Uganda House, the headquarters of UPC were Mr Olara Otunnu, Mr Matthias Nsubuga and Mr Mike Mabike among others.
But at 1:45 pm, youth donned in red T-shirts with words inscribed on Free Uganda Now stormed out of the building on to be met by the police that built a ring around them.
At 1:57 PM Otunnu, Mabike and Nsubuga emerged from 6th floor but upon reaching in front of Uganda House, police blocked them and surrounded them with the youth together and hence a scuffle and exchange of words ensued between them and Kampala Metropolitan South Police chief, Moses Kafeero.
“There is no rally today and you are inciting the public, we shall not allow you waste people’s time” Kafeero said.
However, Mr Otunnu injected and said it was the police that was instead wasting their time because their activities were being conducted within the law.
“We wrote to you and you were aware and therefore we don’t expect this type of confrontation. The law says we should notify you and thereafter provide us with security”
As the debate went on, Mr Kafeero seemed to have made a way through to dissuade the opposition gurus, Central Police Station District Police Commander, Norman Musinga came with police dogs and water cannons.
