Malawi President Bingu wa Mutharika has likened complains by Malawians to squeaking and urged them to stop protesting over issues like forex and fuel shortages.
The leader made the remark in Zomba, the country’s old capital city, when he launched a National Tree Planting season.
The President chided at Non Governmental organisations that fight for human rights for failing to attend the tree planting launch , saying; “they did not know that issues of climate change were also human right issues.”
“Malawians are like chickens, they cry over simple issues. Are you telling me that the only problems you can cry about are forex and fuel? We have challenges of climate change, but where are they, where are the ‘opposition’ NGOs?" Mutharika queried while mimicking chicken cry.
Mr Mutharika said the opposition parties and NGOs were only interested on issues that would endear themselves with the international community but that would not help Malawians.

"If you have ideas how develop this country come to me. I call upon [Bakili] Muluzi and John Tembo to come forward if they have constructive ideas on how to develop this country," he said.

Maize Scarcity
Recently former President Muluzi had offered to help Mutharika to sort out the economic mess the country is going through while Tembo—the leader of opposition in Parliament—said he would wait for official communication from government to take up the offer.President Mutharika also admitted that Malawi is facing maize scarcity.
He, however, assured Malawians that government will make the staple food available and warned private businesses and traditional leaders of punitive measures if they take advantage of the scarcity to reap off people.
