The officers had been travelling in a 14-seater private vehicle when it collided head-on with an oncoming crude oil tanker at around 10:30 in the morning, about 100 metres from the Mau tea-processing factory.
Kericho divisional police commander (OCPD) Kipkemboi Rop confirmed the incident.
He said documents recovered from the crash scene indicated the officers may have been escorting some goods from Kisumu.
Two AK-47 rifles were also recovered from the vehicle, he said.
He said they had arrested the truck driver and the turnboy for suspected drunken driving. Both escaped the accident unhurt.
The injured police officers, two of whom sustained serious injuries, were rushed to Siloam Hospital in Kericho Town for treatment, while the body of the dead was transferred to the Kericho District Hospital mortuary.
