More drivers are caught drunk at the wheel during the summer months. This is one of the results of the latest police ant-drink-drive campaign BOB that encourages motorists to designate a driver who will not touch any alcoholic beverages ahead of a car journey.
Checks carried out by the police during the first days of July showed that 5.7% of the drivers stopped had consumed too much alcohol to be able to drive safely. This figure is 2% higher than during the winter.
The Belgian Mobility Secretary, Etienne Schouppe (Christian democrat), told VRT News: "People are drinking more!"
Mr Schouppe made it clear that he thought this showed the use of such checks. The present campaign including checks will run until the end of August.
So far 44,000 drivers have been stopped.(http://www.deredactie.be/cm/vrtnieuws.english/news/110610_drunk)
